Visa rules depend on nationality. Many Western passport holders, including UK, US and most EU nationals, can enter Malaysia visa-free for up to 90 days, and ASEAN nationals, including Philippine passport holders, for up to 30 days. Indian nationals currently enter visa-free for up to 30 days under a waiver that runs until 31 December 2026. Every visitor must complete the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days before arrival; ILH shares the link with every confirmation. Entry rules are set by the Malaysian government and may change.

West coast (Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang): driest December–February, with short afternoon showers the rest of the year. East coast islands (Redang, Perhentian, Tioman): best March–October; many island resorts close during the November–February monsoon. Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak): can be visited year-round, generally drier from about March to October. We route around the monsoon rather than avoiding travel altogether.

On request we plan the whole program around JAKIM halal-certified restaurants, prayer times and family-friendly, alcohol-free options where available. Climbing Mount Kinabalu needs a climbing permit, a licensed mountain guide and a confirmed overnight stay on the mountain, and daily places are limited, so we book these well in advance. Other parks, such as Kinabatangan, Danum Valley, Bako and Mulu, need park entry and guide bookings rather than special permits, which we arrange. Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley fills early, so book several months ahead for peak season.

Travel continues normally during Ramadan. Hotel restaurants stay open, and many restaurants and cafés in the cities open as usual, although some local eateries close during daylight hours. Non-Muslim guests can still order alcohol at licensed hotels, bars and restaurants. Evening Ramadan bazaars and buka puasa buffets are a highlight. Hari Raya Aidilfitri at the end of Ramadan is a major public holiday, so book flights and hotels early for those dates.
